Abstract : In this paper, coherence and cohesion are considered as the two dimensions of knowledge integration. Drawing on a statistical analysis of patent data in the semiconductor industry from 1968 to 2002 we examine the impact of knowledge integration on the firms’ inventive performance in the semiconductor industry. The results suggest that coherence has a positive contribution to inventive capabilities, while cohesion generally has the opposite impact. However, in unfamiliar situations, where the firm engages in explorative activities, cohesion is found to be beneficial for inventions. The main contribution, therefore, is to emphasize that beyond technological knowledge diversity and R&D intensity, the mode of knowledge integration is a key determinant of inventive performance.
