SKEMA BBA student: music label CEO and marketing manager

Published on 05 May 2017

Rock4You Records, a label to promote and produce artists was cofounded by Cyril Vanneste, 19, a BBA in Global Management student on SKEMA’s Sophia-Antipolis campus. He has just launched an innovative app for musicians: Live!

Rock4You Records is an associative label based in the Alpes-Maritimes. Since its creation in 2016, music contacts have been set up in Sophia-Antipolis, Menton, Cannes, Nice, Antibes...

"When we realised that it was working well, we wanted to go one step further and we thought of Live!. The label provides studios for artists to mix and arrange their music, the “live” part was missing. The Live! App is the “on the spot” side of the label", explains Cyril.

Live! is a mobile app where you can quickly see all the artists nearby who play your style of music. The app is also a great way for musicians to make themselves a name locally. Live! Provides information about the place offers a sample of artists’ sounds before going to see them and gives the itinerary to get there. Watch the presentation here.

SKEMA has supported this project and continues to do so. The school enabled Cyril to take part in programmes offering aid for entrepreneurs (especially the SKEMA Student-entrepreneur Bootcamp in April 2016):

"This Bootcamp is a sort of pre-incubation that

lasts for three days. At the end of the programme, young entrepreneurs are selected to join the SKEMA incubator. I loved it, it was great. It enabled me to meet people and to test my product. It was very hard work. Our business model was studied in great detail and I came out of this experience with good advice and some great opportunities for partnerships. I also took part in the Midem in Cannes in June 2016, which is the salon of reference for the music industry. Any musical start up has to be there. It costs around 400 euros and SKEMA funded 50%. There again, I met many interesting contacts and obtained many promises. We are talking to three international companies for future partnerships."

The PACA Est incubator at Sophia-Antipolis also helps him to broaden the professional network around the project.

Cyril and his partner– a producer and sound engineer, make a good team. Cyril is a guitarist and loves music, but he has chosen to study finance. His management skills will no doubt come in useful when he is seeking funding in the future to ensure the financial sustainability of Rock4You.

Cyril is very pleased with this entrepreneurial adventure:

"I think that when you have an idea that you want to see through and when you have support, it’s better just to do it straight away. I am delighted to be able to study at the same time. Working to achieve one’s ideas is by far the best thing to try. I like sharing the project’s progress with my family who have been incredibly helpful and I recommend anyone who feels like I do to go ahead and do it. You will not regret it!".
