Brazil campus BBA launches Virtual Cities project

Published on 18 September 2020

This project for BBA students on SKEMA's campus in Brazil combines expertise and market analysis in order to develop students' capacities.

August 17, SKEMA Brazil launched the Virtual Cities project during the BBA students' welcome week.

The project is an interdisciplinary lab that will combine students from the BBA and the master programmes and professors to develop virtual cities and markets. Students will be responsible for creating and coordinating companies' activities from different sectors and their online stores. They will use management tools and software used by big players on the real market to manage human resources, planning and project management. In these cities there will be a virtual government to create an experience close to reality, involving currency circulation and fiscal policies.

This first semester, the goal of the project will be planning and creating the city based in Brazil and the main activity in the city will be related to agribusiness, specifically dairy farming. In partnership with real companies from this market, the students (mentored by the professors) will develop products to be presented for these companies at the end of the semester.

Next year, the purpose will be to evaluate the challenges that arose during the first months of implementation and continue to expand the project, based on this first experience.

According to the Belo Horizonte campus dean, Geneviève Poulingue, “We can take inspiration from other sectors such as aviation to develop skills using simulations. This is exactly what we are doing through the Virtual Cities project. During this learning journey, students learn how to create tools for the needs they identify to manage challenges. This is very a differential pedagogical approach.”

The project will provide students with an opportunity to understand and experience market realities in a high-tech lab. So management of companies, such as hiring new employees and the decision-making processes, will be made with the connection between the theory learned in class with practical experience. From the beginning of their journey at SKEMA, students will be in touch with the virtual market and the professors will use this lab to promote knowledge acquisition.
