Happy Chinese New Year

Published on 04 February 2019

Students on our China campus are celebrating. Chinese New Year is one of the world's most prominent and celebrated festivals, referred to as the Spring Festival in modern China. Associated with myths and customs, Chinese New Year is an excellent opportunity for international students to understand Chinese culture.

This year's Spring Festival is February 5th. Let's take a look at how the staff and students at SKEMA Business School's Suzhou campus celebrate this festival.

The Spring Festival has not yet arrived, the Suzhou campus has been decorated with traditional spring couplets, Chinese window paper-cut and red lanterns. Chinese and international faculty and staff together wrapped up dumplings, a traditional dish that must be sampled during the Chinese New Year. With the help of Chinese teachers, SKEMA students learned to draw a Chinese painting of pigs as 2019 is the year of the pig.

During the Spring Festival, the campus will be temporarily closed, and some students have chosen to live in local Chinese families to experience the Chinese New Year. After the Spring Festival holiday, students will also enjoy a traditional puppet show performed by a Taiwanese puppet show master, they will learn to make Suzhou traditional woodcuts with New Year pictures, and they will make their own lanterns for the Lantern Festival (usually considered the last day of the Chinese New Year).

We wish our Asian community a very happy new year!
