HEC Montreal and SKEMA: partners for double degree

Published on 02 December 2020

A double degree agreement between SKEMA and its new partner HEC Montreal will enable Master in Management programme (chartered accountancy - audit path) students to follow a dedicated international path for the first time in Canada and France. The two schools are thus diversifying their existing double degree offer and enabling professional integration in North America as well as in France and Europe.

An international career path for economic vitality
Although we are experiencing a slowdown in international exchanges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this partnership will enable students of both the schools to join this programme from the start of the 2021 academic year.

"National specificities in the fields of accounting, taxation and law impose a territorial anchoring in the professions of chartered accountancy and auditing. This hinders the international mobility of our students during their studies and after graduation. However, international mobility is sought after by both our students and their future employers. This double degree with the Master's in Management Accounting-Control-Auditing from HEC Montreal will allow SKEMA students to gain international experience and access the North American job market in the field of accounting and auditing," said Frédéric Romon, professor and head of the accounting and auditing programme at SKEMA Business School.

"Accounting rules, which vary from country to country, make it difficult for graduates to practise outside the jurisdiction in which they graduated. Thanks to this dual degree, we are making international mobility possible both during training and in professional life," said Julien Le Maux, full professor in the accounting sciences department at HEC Montreal.

In addition to making international internships possible, this dual degree meets the expectations of the “big four” recruiters and international accounting firms for whom international experience is crucial. Students from both schools will be able to expand their professional opportunities in Canada and the United States, as well as in France and Europe.

"As part of our KPMG Eurometropole team, we support entrepreneurs from here and elsewhere in the development of their businesses. For our clients, we need versatile talent with a global vision. Training with a double degree providing the technical and cultural openness necessary for quality support is a real asset. This dual degree should be perfectly suited to our needs," asserted Thomas Philippe, a chartered accountant and partner at KPMG France, who has also worked in New York.

The situation is similar for firms and organisations in Quebec and Canada, that have a particular interest in international experience during their recruitment process in the accounting and financial fields.

This international diversification in terms of skills and experience will make it easier for future graduates to practise their profession in different accounting and regulatory frameworks.

A pilot project to create a cohort spirit
The double degree will enable students to obtain in three years the “Grande École – Master in Management degree” from SKEMA (specialisation in accounting and auditing - ECA) and the Master in Management (MSc) Accounting-Control-Audit from HEC Montreal. The cohort is thought as a pilot project of 10 students that will eventually create a cohort spirit between the students of the two schools.

HEC Montreal and SKEMA are members of the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles and hold the AACSB and Equis accreditations from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), reflecting the high level of their training.

To summarise:
    • Students will be able to register for the double degree in public accounting and auditing in 2021. The dates will be specified to them by both schools.
    • They will pay the registration and tuition fees to their home institution at no extra cost.
    • The first double degree cohort will begin in autumn 2021.
