The First International Congress on Law and Artificial Intelligence at SKEMA Brazil, online, was held at the beginning of July. With some 500 participants, the congress addressed the most relevant topics in the areas of law and AI with the purpose of bringing analysis and possible answers to the main questions regarding the application of AI in the legal area. Students, researchers, undergraduate students and professionals related to the areas of law and AI participated.
There were two intense days, between lectures and research presentations. In total there were 484 registered, with 505 participants from the research groups. A total of 246 research projects were approved for official publication, accounting for over 1500 pages of scientific production. In addition, 41 coordinators and teachers, 24 staff members and 17 speakers and mediators participated.
The dean of SKEMA Brazil, Dr Geneviève Poulingue, said that the decision to organise an event like this was very propitious because, although we are isolated by the pandemic, professionals need to acquire knowledge constantly. "The congress showed that SKEMA's decision to choose Brazil for its international development was right, mainly because SKEMA has found here people of great knowledge who are always willing to share that knowledge", explained Poulingue.
The coordinator of the congress and also of SKEMA Brazil's postgraduate course called Nanodegree in Law and AI, the lawyer Edgar Jacobs, says he is enthusiastic about the feedback obtained during the congress and explains: "as the subject is still very new to the market, we realise there's a demand for knowledge. That is why we are investing in bringing knowledge to professionals and students. So, in upcoming courses and events, we intend to have the same quality of professionals, and even bigger and more important discussions about law and artificial intelligence".
