Breaking the boundaries: The unique paths of SKEMA students from Scientific Preparatory Classes

Published on 12 March 2024

Every year, several students from the scientific preparatory classes choose to join SKEMA Business School. International perspectives, an influential and international alumni network, diversified career opportunities in marketing, management, or finance: the motivations are varied. Meet Bianca, Théo, and Eloïse, students of the Master in Management (PGE) programme who chose SKEMA!

Bianca, you are a M1-year PGE student on a gap year, coming from a preparatory class in mathematics and physics. Why did you choose to join SKEMA?

After my scientific baccalaureate, I decided to continue in a preparatory class in mathematics, physics, and engineering sciences (MPSI) at the Pierre-Gilles-de-Gennes, in Paris (13th district). I like mathematics and naturally chose this field. My goal was to pass the competitive exams to join the statistics institutes, but I noticed that there were bridge exams for management schools. I preferred to choose this path rather than that of an engineering school because I am interested in finance and the opportunity to do a work-study programme in the second year of the master's at SKEMA.

However, I must admit that I had to work more intensely upon my arrival to master the economics courses. Currently on a gap year, I am doing an internship at Bolloré Logistics in management control within the financial department. I am considering joining the MSc in Corporate Financial Management or the MSc in Audit, Management, Accounting, and Information Systems.

Théo, you come from a preparatory class in physics, chemistry, and engineering sciences. What were the determining factors for your arrival at SKEMA?

Indeed, after my preparatory class at Lycée Chateaubriand in Rennes, I decided to join SKEMA with the desire to study finance. I was attracted by the MSc Financial Markets & Investments (MSc FMI), which is very well ranked in international rankings, and there is no comparison with the other schools I could join.

When I arrived in the L3 year, I had to catch up on my economics, but if you work hard, there's nothing to worry about. The prep school prepares us well! I chose finance because I love mathematics and computer science, and currently, I am interning at Natixis CIB as a sales assistant. I hope to turn towards trading because that's what I love. I hope to join the Stellenbosch campus soon!

Eloïse, you come from a preparatory class in biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth sciences (BCPST). Why did you choose to join SKEMA?

eloisepge.jpegAfter obtaining my scientific baccalaureate, I did not have a well-defined professional project apart from a keen interest in biology. So, I followed the well-trodden path to a BCPST preparatory class at the Lycée Saint-Louis (Paris 6th), encouraged by my teachers, following excellent science grades and the profile of a competent student. However, over time, I realised that the direction of my scientific studies was moving away from my real professional aspirations. Indeed, although I have always found the sciences fascinating, I did not recognise myself in the prospects offered by the Agro engineering schools to which the prep school was steering me. I was determined to join a business school and SKEMA offered me the opportunity for an atypical reorientation through its AST1 bridge exam.

After joining SKEMA, I was happy to discover a diverse set of possible paths and was able to confirm my interest in marketing and international trade. Currently on the Suzhou campus, SKEMA with its many international perspectives and academic exchanges allows me to build a tailor-made professional project in accordance with my aspirations and passions, while completing and strengthening my previous path.
