Margherita Pagani publishes a landmark article on boundaryless metaverses in a top-tier journal
Margherita Pagani, Professor, Director SKEMA Center for AI - SCAI, has had her article Challenges of boundaryless metaverses: implications for IS research, co-authored with Omar El Sawy (Marshall School of Business), accepted for publication in the European Journal of Information Systems, a leading academic journal ranked ABS 4* and Q1.
In this paper, the two scholars propose a rethinking of the metaverse not as a single, unified space, but as an ecosystem of systems evolving within a boundaryless environment. They highlight the coexistence of multiple metaverse ecosystems, the structuring role of stakeholder dynamics, and the specific governance challenges raised by the multi-sided platforms that shape these emerging digital environments.
The study also points to the rise of the industrial metaverse, marked by the emergence of new platform properties that are reshaping industrial coordination and value creation. By moving beyond hype and technology-driven narratives, the article opens major avenues for Information Systems research, particularly in the areas of regulation, public policy and societal impact.
This publication draws in part on empirical work informed by contributions to Opinions of the European Economic and Social Committee, to which Margherita Pagani contributed, thereby strengthening the link between academic research and public decision-making.
