EPURAI: Ethical Public Robots and Artificial Intelligence
As artificial intelligence increasingly transforms public services, EPURAI investigates how these technologies can be governed in an ethical, transparent, and democratically legitimate way. The project explores innovative forms of citizen participation to support the design of more responsible, trustworthy, and inclusive digital public services.
Rethinking the Democratic Legitimacy of Artificial Intelligence in Public Services
The rapid deployment of artificial intelligence and robotic technologies in public services raises important ethical, social, and governance challenges. EPURAI addresses these issues by examining how intelligent systems can be designed and governed in ways that respect democratic values and public trust.
Bringing together expertise from economics, management, public administration, psychology, computer science, and engineering, the project adopts a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the relationship between citizens and AI-driven public services.
At the core of EPURAI lies a fundamental question: how can citizens actively contribute to the governance of artificial intelligence used in public decision-making?
The project investigates mechanisms for integrating citizens' values, expectations, and preferences into automated decision-making processes. It also examines how public institutions can foster greater transparency, accountability, and participation when deploying AI technologies.
To address these challenges, EPURAI develops and tests innovative methodologies based on the principles of co-design and co-governance, enabling citizens and public authorities to jointly shape the future of digital public services.
