Can Accountants Think Outside the Box?
Published on 19/05/2025
When you hear "accountants," creativity probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind. In the collective imagination, they’re straight-laced, rigid… a bit like Lego bricks. But when you see what some artists can create with Legos, you start to wonder: could we be wrong about accountants?
What if they were actually misunderstood artists? Can they think outside the box—are they even allowed to?
Kevin Erkeletyan is betting that accountants are far more than the stereotypes suggest. To make his case, he’s invited Raluca Sandu, Dean of Faculty at SKEMA Business School. Not only is she a professor and researcher in Accounting, but she’s also someone who builds the Faculty’s projects brick by brick—quite literally!
Through the story and world of Lego, Raluca helps us rediscover a discipline that is far more strategic and innovative than most people imagine. From blockchain and ESG to global standards and corporate restructuring, accounting is reinventing itself every day. And accountants? They’re becoming key partners to top executives.
But… under what conditions?
Welcome to “Makes Sense?”—a deep dive into pop culture to explore today’s societal questions.
