Professor Gilles Guiheux, a researcher into social history in China, will speak on the perspectives for reform and greater openness in China.
China is currently the world's second-largest economy and its largest exporter. In the wake of the crises that have led to a slowdown in growth, China's leaders are seeking to re-establish their growth strategy. China is still faced with several challenges: an ageing population, a shrinking workforce, the lack of transparency in its political system, competitiveness problems, etc. There is still a sizeable gulf between the quality of life in cities versus in the countryside, and in the urban areas on the coastline versus the interior of the country. These inequalities are increasingly becoming a cause for concern, both for the Chinese authorities and for investors.
Gilles Guiheux is a professor at the University of Paris Diderot and a member of the CESSMA laboratory. He is a researcher into the social history of China and is currently leading a programme devoted to working methods in modern China. His publications include “The People's Republic of China from 1949 to the present day” and he has contributed to the “Perspectives chinoises” journal.
A cocktail will follow the conference.
