SKEMA’s Lille and Sophia Antipolis campuses certified for their environmental performance

Published on 13 July 2020

After a complete audit, SKEMA’s Lille and Sophia Antipolis campuses are now certified “BREEAM”: the world’s leading standard for buildings’ environmental performance.

A comprehensive, independent study

The BREEAM certification (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) was granted after a comprehensive, independent analysis based on the study and assessment of various areas: energy management, buildings’ pollution levels, water management, people management, access to sustainable transport services, occupants’ health and well-being, the use of innovative processes and waste recovery.

The study period lasted three months, from April to June 2020.

Although located in very different environments (an urban hyper-centre in Lille; a ‘close to nature’ area in Sophia Antipolis), our two campuses obtained excellent results in construction quality and building management, particularly through the efforts recognised as exemplary in the following areas:
• Health and well-being: work on users’ comfort in terms of acoustic objectives, optimised lighting, the quality of indoor air and the level of occupants’ satisfaction.
• Transport: the introduction of facilities to encourage soft mobility, with bike racks, lockers and showers.
• Ecology: in Lille, the large-scale installation of plants into patios to create appealing outdoor areas; the improvement and maintenance of numerous greenspaces at the Sophia Antipolis campus
• Management: a strategy for fully integrating users/students into the life of the building. In this respect, an app was introduced for communicating all kinds of information.
• Energy: continuing on from its ISO 14001 certification, SKEMA assiduously monitors all its energy consumption and aims to reduce it each year, so as to run the building in line with climate and current issues.

The SKEMA campuses are set to raise the stakes considerably.

For students, staff, partners, companies and graduates, our seven campuses’ living spaces are intrinsic to the SKEMA experience. The campus managers are coordinating numerous projects involving the renovation, aesthetic improvement, standardisation and equipment of sites. As part of the SKY25 strategic plan, the SKEMA campuses are set to raise the stakes considerably, with a four-pronged approach called ‘4S’: Services, Smart, Society, Sustainability,” said quality and accreditations director Elise Tosi.

The four aspects of the 4S approach:
- Services: the development of the range and quality of all services available to people present at or visiting a SKEMA campus.
- Smart: the deployment and optimisation of digital solutions at interconnected campuses
- Society: the introduction of actions highlighting campuses and fostering their integration and participation in their home territories’ initiatives.
- Sustainability: the roll-out of an action plan supporting campuses’ sustainable and ecological development within their environment (natural or urban).

SKEMA’s Lille campus lies in the heart of the city in the Euralille district, the metropolis’s business centre, and a few minutes’ walk from Old Lille and the Grand Place. It is also located between the two TGV high-speed train stations (Lille Flandres and Lille Europe), an hour from Paris-Gare du Nord, 38 minutes from Bruxelles-Midi and 1hr 20mins from London-St Pancras.

Close to Nice, SKEMA’s Sophia Antipolis campus lies at the heart of Europe’s leading technology park, whose success derives directly from its environment (the site is surrounded by 1,500 hectares of greenspace planted with Mediterranean trees), its thriving cultural and social life and its diversity. A global benchmark in terms of innovation, Sophia Antipolis is home to 2,230 businesses, which employ 36,300 people from 63 countries, and work with 4,000 researchers and 5,000 students every day.
