Challenges magazine ranks SKEMA alumnus’ startup as one the best to invest in 2020

Published on 05 May 2020

The Challenges magazine recently ranked Les Marmots, a startup co-founded by SKEMA alumnus Maxence Laplante, as one of the “100 start-ups to invest in during 2020”. Les Marmots, one of the first 100% eco-responsible platforms dedicated to children, was launched in 2018.

“To be referenced on their website, products must tick at least one of the five following boxes: hand-made, made in France, second-hand, organic and/or eco-responsible,” says Challenges in its article (read about it here).

Located within Blanchemaille in Roubaix (of which SKEMA is a partner), this young startup is in need of funds. It is seeking €500,000 to grow its sales and improve its website (5,000 unique visitors per month at present).

Maxence Laplante studied the ESDHEM course (in law) at SKEMA’s Lille campus, then joined the SKEMA Grande Ecole programme at the Sophia Antipolis campus. After two long-term internships in Canada (6 months) and Thailand (one year), he returned to Sophia Antipolis for an M2 and took the MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, then directed by Philippe Chéreau (“…my favourite teacher, who really inspired me during my course,” he says). The young graduate worked for three years as a business developer before developing a strong desire for a career change. He left his job and set off on his own on a trip across the world. On his return to the Nord region of France, he founded Les Marmots with his childhood friend and the help and advice of SKEMA Ventures. Philippe Chéreau, SKEMA Ventures director, and Franck Hanoh, SKEMA Ventures manager in Lille, have been closely following the progress of Maxence and his start-up ever since.
