SKEMA KTO Paper Development Workshop

​Call for participants

The eighth SKEMA KTO Paper Development Workshop will be held at SKEMA Business School in Sophia Antipolis (French Riviera), June 24-26, 2019. This PDW is open to doctoral students and young researchers.

The purpose of the workshop is to enhance the research skills and the publication likelihood of promising scholars in the fields of strategy, international business, organisation, innovation or entrepreneurship. To allow for interactive discussions and feedback between participants in a friendly environment, the number of participants will be limited to 20-25.

Participants will attend seminars conducted by Gautam Ahuja (Cornell Tech), Stefano Brusoni (ETH Zurich), Gino Cattani (NYU Stern), Lars Frederiksen (Aarhus University), Tobias Kreschmer (LMU), Tomi Laamanen (University of St. Gallen), and Daniel Tzabbar (Drexel University). In small group sessions managed by an experienced faculty, each paper will be allocated a senior scholar as a discussant and authors will receive feedback from peers and other participants. Thus, participants will be required to read and review the papers from other participants of the session. The workshop will be organised by Bruno Cirillo, Ludovic Dibiaggio, and Diego Zunino (SKEMA Business School).

The workshop is open to all interested scholars though preference will be given to advanced PhD students, post doctorates and early career academics.

Faculty Profile

Gautam Ahuja
is professor of Management and Organizations at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University. His research focuses on how firms use technology to gain and exploit competitive advantage. Gautam Ahuja is editor-in-chief of Organization Science, and he has served as associate editor for Management Science and editorial board member for AMR, ASQ, AMJ, SMJ and SO.

Stefano Brusoni is professor of Technology and Innovation Management at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on strategic implications of product and organisational design processes and on individual learning mechanisms. He is associate editor of Strategic Management Journal and member of the Editorial Board of Organization Science, Strategic Organization and Academy of Management Discoveries. He is division chair-elect of the Technology and Innovation Management Division (AOM). He has recently published in Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, European Management Journal, Organization Science, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

Gino Cattani is currently associate professor of Strategy and Organization Theory at the Stern School of Business (New York University). He received a PhD in Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. His research spans two main areas of investigation. The first stream deals with the question of how firms can sustain their competitive advantage in the face of technological change. His work analyses this question of intentionality by looking at how that knowledge is leveraged in a different application domain (e.g., a new market or industry) from that in which it originally accumulated. The second stream examines the question of how novelty obtains recognition and legitimacy when multiple audiences - using different evaluation criteria - evaluate such novelty. His research also explores how candidates’ attributes, as captured by their structural position in a given field, influence their ability to appeal to such audiences. His research has been published in American Sociological Review, Organization Science, Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Strategy Science, Academy of Management Journal, Research Policy and Industrial and Corporate Change. He is currently deputy senior editor at Organization Science, associate editor at Management Science and Industrial and Corporate Change, and editor of Advances in Strategic Management.

Lars Frederiksen is professor at the department of Management, BSS, Aarhus University, Denmark. At the department he serves as head of Talent and Research. Lars specialises in the management of innovation and technology with particular emphasis on innovation strategies, entrepreneurship, knowledge creation and search, platforms and crowdfunding, innovation in communities, and innovation in project-based organisations. He was awarded his PhD from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, and worked hereafter at Imperial College Business School, London. Empirically, Lars focuses on industries such as software, roads and water, engineering consulting, and entertainment (i.e. music and film). Lars has applied various methods in this work, from social network analysis and multiple regression/hazard models to qualitative interviews. Lars has developed survey-based and web-based data sets as well as worked on public register data. Lars’ work appears in journals such as Organization Science, Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, European Management Review, Advances in Strategic Management, Industry and Innovation, Construction Management and Economics, and others. Lars has developed and delivered undergraduate, master, MBA and PhD courses on innovation management, digital transformation, new product development and project management, heterodox economics and theory development. He has created and taught executive courses in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Finally, Lars has provided consultancy services to various companies in the EU.

Tobias Kretschmer is a professor of Management, director of the Institute for Strategy, Technology and Organization (ISTO), and dean of the Munich School of Management at LMU Munich. He also coordinates the PhD programme in Management at LMU. Tobias holds a PhD in Economics from London Business School and an MSc in Strategy from the University of St. Gallen. He previously held full-time positions at London School of Economics and INSEAD. His work focuses on strategy and organization design in technology-intensive industries, especially platform markets and information and communication technologies. His work appeared, among others, in American Economic Review, Management Science, Information Systems Research, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. He is an associate editor at Strategic Management Journal and International Journal of Industrial Organization and on the editorial boards of Information Economics and Policy and the Journal of Organization Design.

Tomi Laamanen is chaired professor of Strategic Management, director of the Institute of Management, director of the PhD programme of General Management, and academic director of the Strategy and International Management Master (SIM) programme of the University of St. Gallen. His research covers the strategic management field broadly ranging from corporate strategy to strategy execution. The special emphasis of his research is on mergers and acquisitions, and in particular, acquisition programmes and serial acquirers, management’s cognition, strategy processes and strategic issue management, and capability dynamics. Tomi Laamanen is former associate editor of Strategic Management Journal (2009-2015), editor-in-chief of Long Range Planning (2016-), and member of the Editorial Boards of Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Discovery, Journal of Management, and Strategic Management Journal. His research has been published in refereed international journals, including Strategic Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Research Policy, Long Range Planning, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Strategic Organization, Small Business Economics, International Journal of Technology Management, and Harvard Business Review.

Daniel Tzabbar is an associate professor of Strategy and Technology Innovation Management, at LeBow College of Business, Drexel University. He received his PhD from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. His research is in the intersection of technology innovation management, strategy and human capital in the context of organisational learning and technological change. Specifically, he examines how various sources of the inflow and outflow of knowledge – scientists recruitment and turnover, R&D alliances, M&A and the geographic dispersion of R&D team-driver these transformations. His work has been published in premier outlets such as, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science and Journal of Management, where he also serves as an editorial review board member.


Organising members

Francesco Castellaneta
is professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at SKEMA Business School - Université Côte d'Azur (GREDEG). Previously, he was assistant professor at Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics (2011-2017). He has been International Faculty Fellow (IFF) at MIT Sloan School of Management in 2014. He teaches Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, and Introduction to Management in the undergraduate, MSc and executive programmes. His research work aims to understand how business organisations use, acquire, build and protect their resources in the context of complex strategic initiatives, like buyouts and venture capital investments. He has published in journals such as Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Industrial and Corporate Change, Long Range Planning and others. He consults for private equity and venture capital firms.

Bruno Cirillo is assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at SKEMA Business School. He obtained his PhD in business administration and management at Bocconi University. His research interests include organisational learning, innovation and technical change, corporate renewal and entrepreneurship, with particular emphasis on the implications of employee entrepreneurship on organisational and individual change. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Management Studies. His research has been published in Organization Science. He won the TIM Best Dissertation Award at the Academy of Management Annual Conference in 2013.

Ludovic Dibiaggio is professor of Economics at SKEMA Business School. He is the director of the SKEMA Research Centre in Knowledge, Technology and Organisation (KTO). His research focuses on the co-evolution of innovation and organisation at the firm, industry or regional levels. He has published in several academic journals such as Research Policy, Industrial and Corporate Change, Industry and Innovation and European Management Review.

Diego Zunino is assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at SKEMA Business School, Université Cote d’Azur. He received his PhD from Copenhagen Business School in Economics and Management. His research investigates topics in entrepreneurship, crowdfunding, and categorisation. He has published in Organization Science.
